E-Commerce SEO: How to Optimize Your Product Pages
An optimized product page answers the buyer's questions and helps Google understand what you sell.

On an e-commerce site, product pages and category pages are the pages that convert. Their optimization should serve two goals: helping Google understand the offer and helping the buyer decide.
1. A clear title and URL
- An explicit H1: brand, model and main feature.
- A unique title tag per product, with the product name and a differentiating element.
- A short, readable URL, stable over time.
2. A description written for your customers
- Avoid copying the manufacturer's description, which dozens of other sites reuse.
- Answer the real questions: who the product is for, how to use it, its dimensions, materials and limits.
- Add concrete benefits, a size guide, a FAQ.
3. Quality visuals
Several photos from several angles, compressed and clearly named, with descriptive alt text. Consider demo videos when they help the purchase.
4. Product structured data
Product markup (schema.org) helps Google read the name, image, price, currency and availability. It can enable rich results. Follow two rules: marked-up data must match the visible content of the page, and ratings (AggregateRating) should only be used if real customer reviews are displayed.
5. Customer reviews
Authentic reviews reassure buyers and refresh the page's content. Display them on the page and never publish fake reviews.
6. Product variants
- If variants (size, color) are very close, group them on one page with a selector.
- If they must have distinct URLs, clearly indicate the preferred version with the canonical tag.
7. Filters and faceted navigation
Filters can generate thousands of URL combinations. Decide which ones have real search value (for example "women's running shoes") and limit the crawling and indexing of the others.
8. Out-of-stock or discontinued products
- Temporary stock-out: keep the page, show availability and offer alternatives or a back-in-stock alert.
- Permanently discontinued product: 301-redirect to an equivalent product or the category if the relevance is real, otherwise let the page return 404 or 410.
9. Linking and structure
- A breadcrumb trail consistent with the categories.
- Links to similar or complementary products.
- Rich category pages: useful text, clear filters, not just a grid of products.
Finally, monitor mobile loading speed: on a store, every second saved can improve the experience and sales.
