Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free tool that lets you manage how your business appears in Google Search and Google Maps. For a local shop or service, it is often the first point of contact with future customers.
How Google ranks local results
Google states that local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance (does the listing match the search?), distance (how far is the business from the person or place searched?) and prominence (is the business well known and well regarded, online and offline?).
The essential steps
- Claim and verify your listing: without verification, you don't control it.
- Use your real business name, the one customers see on your sign. Don't add keywords or a city: it goes against the rules and can lead to suspension.
- Choose the most precise primary category, then a few relevant secondary ones.
- Fill in all details: address, service area, phone, website, opening hours (including special hours).
- Write a clear description of your business and what sets you apart.
- Add your products or services with a short description.
- Post real photos: storefront, interior, team, completed work.
Customer reviews
- Ask satisfied customers for reviews, for example with your listing's direct link.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely.
- Don't buy reviews or only ask happy customers: Google's policies prohibit it.
Stay consistent everywhere
Your name, address and phone number (NAP) should be identical on your website, your listing and directories. Add a clear local page on your site with the same NAP and a map.
Maintain the listing
Post news or offers regularly, answer questions and check your details after any change. Track the listing's insights (calls, directions, website visits) to measure what works.
