How to Write a Good SEO Title Tag

The title tag is the clickable headline shown in Google. Well written, it helps you rank and earn more clicks.

The title tag is the title of your page in the HTML code (<title>). It is usually the clickable blue link shown in Google's results, and also the text of the browser tab. It is one of the most important on-page optimization elements.

What length should you aim for?

Google truncates titles that are too long based on the available width (in pixels), not on an exact number of characters. In practice, aiming for roughly 50 to 60 characters avoids most cut-offs. Keep the most important information at the beginning.

The rules of a good title

  • Place the main keyword near the start, naturally.
  • One unique title per page: never reuse the same title across several URLs.
  • Describe the page accurately: the title must keep the promise of the content.
  • Make people want to click: benefit, precision, update year, number, format (guide, comparison).
  • Add the brand at the end if there is room.

Examples

  • Weak: "Home" or "Blog – Post 12".
  • Fine: "SEO Title Tag: A Guide to Writing It Well".
  • Better: "SEO Title Tag: Length, Tips and Examples".

Mistakes to avoid

  • Stuffing the title with repeated keywords.
  • Using vague titles ("Welcome", "Untitled page").
  • Promising something the page doesn't deliver.
  • Putting the brand first at the expense of the topic.

Good to know

Google may rewrite the displayed title if it judges that your tag doesn't describe the page well, or is too long, empty or repetitive. A clear title that is consistent with the H1 and the content reduces that risk. You can track each page's click-through rate in Google Search Console and test new wordings on pages that get many impressions but few clicks.
