Local SEO Without a Storefront: Optimizing a Service-Area Business
Traveling to your customers doesn't prevent local visibility. Here is how to set up your listing and your site.

Plumbers, electricians, landscapers, in-home coaches, cleaning services: many businesses travel to their customers and have no premises open to the public. They can still be very visible in local searches.
The principle for Google: the service-area business
Google distinguishes between businesses that welcome customers at a specific address and those that serve customers at their own location. For the latter, the Google Business Profile listing can be set up with a service area.
Set up the listing correctly
- Use your real business name, without adding keywords or cities.
- Hide your address if you don't receive customers there: Google's rules require it for businesses without public access.
- Define your service areas: towns or counties actually served. Google limits their number and expects them to match your realistic area of operation.
- Choose the most precise primary category, then a few relevant secondary ones.
- Fill in hours, services, phone and website.
- Add real photos: completed work, team, vehicle, equipment.
A real address is required, even hidden: PO boxes and fake addresses are prohibited. Businesses that have both a place of reception and home visits can display their address while declaring their service area.
One point to understand: distance still matters
Even if your address is hidden, Google uses its location to assess proximity. You will often rank better for searches near that address than for towns farther away in your area. It is normal for visibility to decrease with distance.
Take care of your website
- One page per main service, with genuinely useful content: services, process, timelines, conditions, FAQ.
- A "service areas" page describing your range and the areas served, honestly.
- Completed projects with photos and context (type of job, town, result), with customers' consent.
- Authentic testimonials.
- Visible contact details and a call button on mobile.
LocalBusinessmarkup or a suitable type, with your served area.
Avoid creating dozens of near-identical pages where only the city name changes: Google considers these doorway page spam. Prefer a few solid pages, with content specific to each place when you really have something to say.
Earn reviews and prominence
- Ask each satisfied customer for a review after a job, with the listing's direct link.
- Reply to all reviews.
- Be present in reliable professional directories with consistent information.
- Seek local mentions: partners, associations, local press.
Mistakes to avoid
- Creating several listings for fake addresses in different cities: this can lead to suspension.
- Using a mail-forwarding address or virtual office as if it were a place of reception.
- Stuffing the business name with keywords.
- Declaring an unrealistic service area.
Measure
Track calls, quote requests and directions from the listing, as well as local queries in Search Console. Customers looking for a tradesperson near them often decide quickly: responsiveness and reviews matter as much as visibility.
