How to Create SEO-Friendly URLs
A good URL is short, readable and stable. It helps visitors and search engines understand the page before even opening it.

The URL is a page's address. It appears in the browser bar, in search results and in shared links. A clear URL helps people understand the topic, inspires trust and makes the site easier to manage.
The essential rules
- Short and readable: a few words that describe the page (
/seo-title-tag/) rather than a long sentence. - Hyphens to separate words: Google recommends hyphens rather than underscores (
_). - Lowercase: addresses can be case-sensitive, and mixing upper and lower case creates duplicates.
- The main topic in the URL, naturally, without repetition.
- No special characters or spaces. For languages with accents, it is safer to remove them, since accented characters get encoded in links.
- Consistent: choose a rule (with or without trailing slash, with or without www) and apply it everywhere.
A logical hierarchy
For a structured site, the URL can reflect the organization: /blog/technical-seo/xml-sitemap/. Avoid overly deep structures, though: two or three levels are generally enough.
What to avoid
- Cryptic identifiers:
/p?id=48291tells neither visitors nor engines anything. - Needless parameters and session IDs, which create duplicates.
- Dates in the URL for timeless content: they give an impression of dated content and complicate updating.
- Excess stop words ("the", "of", "for"): removing them shortens the address, but keep it readable.
- Very long URLs that repeat the entire title.
Examples
- Hard to read:
https://www.example.com/index.php?page=12&cat=7 - Fine:
https://www.example.com/blog/optimize-images-seo/
A URL is chosen once
Changing the URL of a published page has a cost: existing links and the page's history are affected. If you must do it:
- Set up a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one.
- Update internal links, the sitemap and the canonical.
- Monitor Search Console after the change.
For WordPress or other CMS sites, define the address structure at installation. A good URL is one you will never need to change.
