Shopify SEO: What the Platform Does for You and What Is Left to Do
Shopify handles several technical SEO basics. You still need to take care of your store's content, structure and speed.

Shopify is a widely used e-commerce platform. It handles several technical aspects of SEO, but it also imposes some constraints. Here is what to know. Features evolve: check the current status of each point in the admin and the official documentation.
What Shopify generally handles for you
- The XML sitemap: generated and updated automatically, at
/sitemap.xml. - The robots.txt file: provided by default with suitable rules, and editable through the corresponding template file for advanced needs.
- Canonical tags: added automatically, which limits duplicates, for example when a product is reachable from several collections.
- HTTPS: enabled on stores.
- SEO fields: page title and meta description editable for each product, collection, page and article.
- Basic structured data for products, often provided by the theme.
- Redirects: a redirect manager in the admin.
Structural constraints
- URLs contain mandatory prefixes:
/products/,/collections/,/pages/,/blogs/. You can't remove them, but you can take care of the final part of the address. - A product can be reachable through several paths; the canonical points to the product's main address.
- Advanced customization of some elements (robots.txt, templates) requires editing the theme.
What is left for you to optimize
- Product pages: unique descriptions rather than the manufacturer's, concrete benefits, FAQ, size guide, authentic reviews.
- Collection pages: a clear title, a useful intro text, a logical organization. These are often the pages that rank for the broadest queries.
- Titles and meta descriptions: to be written carefully and uniquely, without relying on automatic generation.
- Image alt text: describe each product visual.
- URLs (handles): short, readable, stable. Changing a product's address creates a redirect: check that it is in place.
- Internal linking: links between related products, collections and blog posts.
- The blog: built into the platform, useful for answering purchase questions and attracting informational traffic.
- Unavailable products: keep the page for a temporary stock-out, redirect to an equivalent if permanently discontinued.
Speed and apps
The speed of a Shopify store depends mainly on the theme and the number of installed apps, many of which add scripts that slow pages down. Choose a lightweight theme, install only useful apps, remove those you no longer use, compress images and monitor Core Web Vitals on important pages.
International SEO
To sell in several countries or languages, Shopify offers market and language features that manage address structure and hreflang tags. Check the resulting setup with a crawler and Search Console.
Common mistakes
- Reusing supplier descriptions without rewriting them.
- Leaving very similar duplicate collection or product pages.
- Accumulating apps without measuring their effect on speed.
- Deleting products without a redirect or alternative.
Shopify provides good technical foundations, but the difference is made by content, category structure, product page quality and mobile experience.
