Video SEO: How to Gain Visibility on YouTube and Google

Video can be found on YouTube and on Google. Each channel has its own levers, listed here.

A video can be found in two ways: on YouTube, which is itself a search engine, and in Google's results, which sometimes display videos. The levers overlap in part, but not entirely.

Optimizing on YouTube

  • Choose a searched topic: YouTube's and Google's autocomplete, as well as your customers' questions, give precise ideas.
  • Write a clear title that announces the topic, with the words people use, without misleading exaggeration.
  • Take care of the description: the first lines summarize the video and can contain the main topic. Add context, useful links and your contact details.
  • Add chapters with timestamps: they ease navigation and can appear in results.
  • Create a readable thumbnail that makes people want to click and keeps its promise.
  • Provide captions or a transcript: they improve accessibility and help understand the content.
  • Organize your channel into thematic playlists.
  • Aim for viewer satisfaction: YouTube seeks to recommend videos people watch and enjoy. An opening that gets to the point and content that delivers on the title's promise matter more than technical tricks.

Optimizing for Google

Google can display videos in its results, including those on your own site. To be eligible:

  • Place the video on a dedicated page or one where it is clearly featured, with explanatory text around it: title, summary, transcript.
  • Check that the video is accessible to bots: no robots.txt block, crawlable video and thumbnail addresses.
  • Add VideoObject markup (schema.org) with the title, description, thumbnail, date and duration.
  • Use a video sitemap if you have many videos.
  • Monitor the video indexing report in Search Console. It shows the pages where a video is detected and, where relevant, the reasons it isn't indexed, for example when the video isn't the main content of the page.

Hosting: YouTube or your site?

  • YouTube offers an audience, recommendations and a ready-made infrastructure. You can embed the video in your site.
  • Hosting on your site gives more control, but requires performance and configuration work.
  • Avoid publishing the same video in several places without thinking about which address you want Google to highlight.

Integrate video into your content strategy

  • Pair each video with an article or page on the same topic, with reciprocal links.
  • Use video for content that suits it: demonstrations, tutorials, before/after, testimonials.
  • Think about page performance: a heavy video can slow display. Load it on click or deferred when appropriate.

Common mistakes

  • A catchy but misleading title that causes quick abandonment.
  • No description, no chapters, no captions.
  • A video buried in a page with no text or context.
  • Neglecting sound quality, often more decisive than image.

Measure

Track impressions, click-through rate and watch time in YouTube Studio, and clicks from Google's video results in Search Console. Focus on content that meets your audience's real needs.
